Use a Protein Fast to Boost Longevity without the Hunger

Ancient Chinese, Ayurvedic, and even Christian texts all discuss abstaining from food for a period of time. The practices often have some religious or spiritual context, but modern science is proving the practical benefits [1] for increasing lifespan (the number of years one lives) and healthspan (the length of time a person is healthy). In theory, fasting helps initiate certain health processes that clear out damaged cells in the body. This process is known as autophagy. Autophagy is a cellular cleanup process that recycles and repairs so that we may have a more healthy and robust system. Protein fasts have been an effective solution to increasing this process.

For many people, fasting is either not an option, feels too challenging, or is unappealing for other reasons. It’s hard enough to get people to be mindful of what foods they’re eating, much less getting them to stop eating completely. A protein fast can help curve the challenge and get you to that goal faster.

Eating low or no protein for a short period allows certain mechanisms within the body to clean house. For example, the autophagy (cellular cleanup) I mentioned earlier is modulated by a mechanism called mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin). mTOR is a protein sensor [2], which scans the environment (your body) for protein. If there is no protein, the process of autophagy can begin.

In theory, this means that plenty of fats and even some carbohydrates are okay for a protein fast while still getting many of the benefits of a traditional water fast.

For those who would like to begin, note that the benefits of a protein fast are still somewhat theoretical. There haven’t been in-depth studies. But for those who want an alternative to a water fast can try foregoing protein to get many of the same benefits in theory.

To start, consume primarily fatty acids for a period of 24, 48, or 72 hours. Fats can include things like coconut, MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) or olive oil, butter, ghee, or raw cacao. One way to do this is by adding butter and other fats to coffee or tea. Avoid any animal protein (including things like bone broth) but also avoid any amino acids from vegetables to do this properly.

Like any fast, drink plenty of water and be mindful of your physical and mental state. Using our CBG oil Purpose formula can help increase longevity in energy and concentration which is helpful during a protein fast. For people who have never experienced a fast, but would like the benefits, a protein fast can boost longevity pathways without hunger.
